located at a remote village, Fujian Province in China, the project does not only provides a physical function - a school + a bridge, but also presents a spiritual centre. The main concept of the design is to enliven an old community (the village) and to sustain a traditional culture (the castles and lifestyle) through a contemporary language which does not compete with the traditional, but presents and communicates with the traditional with respect. It is done by combining few different functions into one space – a bridge which connects two old castles cross the creek, a school which also symbolically connects past, current with future, a playground (for the kids) and the stage (for the villagers).
A light weight structure traverse a small creek in a single, supple bound, essentially, it is an intelligent contemporary take on the archetype of the inhabited bridge. Supported on concrete piers (which also has the function of a small shop), the simple steel structure acts like a giant box girder that’s been slightly dislocated, so the building subtly twists, rises and falls as it spans the creek. Inside are a pair of almost identical. Wedge-shaped classrooms, each tapering towards the mid point of the structure (which holds a small public library). Although it’s possible to use the building as a bridge, a narrow crossing suspended underneath the steel structure and anchored by tensile wires offers an alternative and more direct route.
Catalyzing a sense of history, the project is more than just a school, but a social centre of the entire village. Physically lightness and spatial fluidity are keys. By a means of sliding and folding doors, the school can be transformed into an impromptu theatre or play structure. The steel frame is wrapped in a veil of slim timber slats, which filter light and temper the interior with cooling breeze – Fujian, on China’s south-east climate. With an assurance that belies its rustic setting, the new building also acts as a foil to the mass and weight of the neighboring historical structures.

兩年前的一次土樓行與這個(gè)座落在閩南的村落結(jié)了緣。小村落名叫下石村,雖屬同一個(gè)村,早年卻是由兩個(gè)圓形土樓組成,中間橫跨一條溪水,傳說(shuō)舊時(shí)兩個(gè)土樓的家族互為仇敵,遂劃渠為界,互不往來(lái)。橋上書(shū)屋的概念由此而生。土樓之間,溪水之上,橋與學(xué)校,舞臺(tái)與場(chǎng)地,意在連接“現(xiàn)在”,“過(guò)去”與“未來(lái)”。

橋上書(shū)屋只有兩個(gè)班,功能非常簡(jiǎn)單卻多樣:兩個(gè)階梯教室,一個(gè)小圖書(shū)館。,兩個(gè)舞臺(tái),一個(gè)商店,多個(gè)功能塊全部安置在橋上,教室單側(cè)的走廊通向中間的圖書(shū)館,兩個(gè)教室在兩端,分別朝向兩個(gè)土樓。教室端頭分別設(shè)計(jì)為轉(zhuǎn)門(mén)和推拉門(mén),使端墻外在課余時(shí)間成為兩個(gè)可以為住民服務(wù)的舞臺(tái)。上課時(shí)用作黑板和講臺(tái),放學(xué)期間村里則在此舉行木偶戲等表演性質(zhì)的公眾活動(dòng)。建筑從功能和形式語(yǔ)言上為兩座土樓創(chuàng)造了連接,同時(shí)也聯(lián)系并重新組織了周邊的空地,為村落提供了很好的公共廣場(chǎng),廣場(chǎng)一邊是圓形的帶有粗糙痕跡的土樓,另一邊是精致簡(jiǎn)練的舞臺(tái),對(duì)話雙方的強(qiáng)烈對(duì)比使整個(gè)空間充滿了張力。每逢傍晚和夜里,這里就聚集了村里自發(fā)活動(dòng)的人群。這樣的設(shè)計(jì)不僅為孩子們提供了學(xué)校教室,解決了交通聯(lián)系問(wèn)題,而且為整個(gè)村帶來(lái)了交流的中心。
在傳統(tǒng)的語(yǔ)境下進(jìn)行建筑設(shè)計(jì),其形式語(yǔ)言往往會(huì)陷入兩種極端,一種是夸大并沉迷于當(dāng)代技術(shù)的表現(xiàn),另一種是強(qiáng)調(diào)原發(fā),流連在工業(yè)化以前的懷舊情緒。在橋上書(shū)屋的設(shè)計(jì)中,我希望通過(guò)謙遜而現(xiàn)代的技術(shù)語(yǔ)言尋求一種介于兩種極端之間的方式。 整個(gè)建筑采取鋼桁架結(jié)構(gòu),桁架內(nèi)部的整體空間作為主要的教室用途,兩個(gè)教室中間設(shè)置公共空間。教室外側(cè)設(shè)置走道,在教室和表皮之間增加一道視覺(jué)通廊。外表面采用10×15@20的木條格柵,用鋼龍骨固定。如薄紗一般的表皮處理使室內(nèi)的視線與行人之間不發(fā)生干擾,同時(shí)遠(yuǎn)處溪水的風(fēng)景又可以暢通無(wú)阻的進(jìn)入到室內(nèi)。下部用鋼絲懸吊過(guò)河的公共橋梁,橋梁為Z字折線形,避開(kāi)對(duì)兩個(gè)端頭廣場(chǎng)的空間沖突,刻意避開(kāi)了正對(duì)廣場(chǎng)的方向。
土樓村落的社區(qū)空間古老而又勻質(zhì),在這種長(zhǎng)期封閉的傳統(tǒng)秩序自我生長(zhǎng)而形成的白板(Tabula Rasa)上,橋上書(shū)屋表達(dá)了一種點(diǎn)狀介入的概念。其針對(duì)這種封閉體系與現(xiàn)代生活方式的矛盾采取了犀利的“針刺療法”,以現(xiàn)代語(yǔ)言的建筑置于傳統(tǒng)的村落社區(qū)空間,以精確和現(xiàn)代感為充滿自發(fā)性和手工性質(zhì)的原生空間注入強(qiáng)心劑,試圖通過(guò)刺激整個(gè)空間體系的問(wèn)題關(guān)鍵點(diǎn),使整個(gè)系統(tǒng)產(chǎn)生新的活力。從這個(gè)角度看,橋上書(shū)屋的設(shè)計(jì)從選址到其著眼點(diǎn)皆超越了小學(xué)教室的功能本身,而關(guān)注到整個(gè)村落的整體空間問(wèn)題。
