一、AC 4 Office Chair

red dot award: product design 2009
Elegant object of function
It is very close to people. For months and even years, people working in offices sit on it: the office chair. Which model a user chooses for this daily relationship tells a lot about that person’s individual sense of style, yet ergonomics also play a role, as much as trends in form and colour schemes. The AC 4 office swivel chair – which was created by Antonio Citterio, a designer who is known above all for objective and elegant concepts – features a design that is the outcome of a very clear attitude: instead of developing its form in a one-dimensional approach only via the primacy of comfort or its functional characteristics, this office chair aims to merge both parameters into a highly self-sufficient design. The AC 4 integrates its ergonomic features discreetly and the benefits of its comfort unlock themselves only in their functional context. Thus the details of the sophisticatedly designed backrest, for example, at first remain invisible to the user. The backrest is actually divided into three sections with distinct internal functions: above the rigid lumbar support zone begins the flexible zone with cushioned chambers that distribute pressure evenly across the upper back, followed by a support zone for the shoulders. This innovative technical feature, however, is neither put on display, nor is it hidden beneath foam padding. Rather, it presents itself self-evidently to the user – details such as aluminium loop armrests or variably adjustable 3D armrests accentuate this visual appearance. The design of the AC 4 resulted in an object of elegant looks and user-centred functionality – an emblem of understated comfort.
二、Colorstripe Coloured Pencil

Changing shape
There are some forms that, in their basic principle, seem to have been established once and for all. Colour pencils are such an item: used every day for text highlighting or more creative drawing, everyone is familiar with them and their most typical form of a lead enclosed within a wooden shaft. The Colorstripe is a very interesting coloured pencil that, due to its design, reinterprets the established principle of such pencils. The unusual appearance of this three-sided pencil is attributable to the coloured lead being visible on the outside, embedded into the shaft using a novel approach. The lead is not located in the centre of the wood, but rather extends right to one of the pencil’s sides – showing itself to the user, unconcealed in cross-section. In functional as well as ecological terms, this innovative design offers many benefits. The use of paint coats for colour coding is made redundant; only a transparent lacquer coating protects the lead and black-coloured wood as well as the fingertips from abrasion against the unconcealed side. This design layout preserves the natural and grip-congenial surface of the wood, while manufacturing itself helps conserve natural resources. Drawing with the Colorstripe, too, offers interesting and new experiences, since the broad slope of the tip facilitates both easy hatching and text highlighting. With a cross-section of around 15.3 mm2, this pencil weighs more than similar products and thus is heavier and more comfortable in the hand – with its purist and consistent design it looks like an object from a colourful future.
三、conof.
Shredder

red dot award: product design 2008
Aesthetic office mate – on change and form
They are extremely discreet mates in the office. Wastepaper baskets and their silent brethren, the shredders, usually lead a rather secluded everyday life under the desks in many offices. Hardly do they boast a design that is aesthetic enough as to present itself self-confidently in the open. Against this background, the conof. shredder has developed the generic form of today’s shredders into a device of almost iconographic appearance. Its housing boasts a visually appealing look of clear lines, lending it a young yet high-quality exterior that matches most other devices in today’s office environments. The shredder adapts the styling of contemporary computers, printers and screens without simply copying their forms – rather it embodies a product with an independent and aesthetic personality that unequivocally conveys its very function. The shredder can cut paper and CDs and/or DVDs, featuring an intuitive and uncomplicated operability. Visually elaborated and easy-to-understand icons that are internationally understandable are just as much a part of this device’s consistent concept, showing the user in an affirmative manner how this device is to be operated and what options there are. In order to enhance the readability of these icons, they are neatly lined up on one side of the black coloured top surface; the top surface features one slot each for either cutting paper or CDs. Another innovative aspect of functionality is that the shredder cuts paper into very small pieces using a micro-diamond cutting system, thus preventing the paper waste from piling up too easily. In addition, the conof. is also pleasantly silent when shredding CDs and DVDs – a device with a clear and aesthetic design that embodies an improvement to everyday life in the office.
四、lean
Desk

True essence
The author Thomas Mann loved to be portrayed sitting at his writing desk. After all, here he sat every day, so this piece of furniture was an expression of his person and his creativity. “lean” is a desk that offers its user great leeway for interpretation. Extraordinary clarity is expressed in its form and by its name, which confirms the understatement and the philosophy that the design embodies. The concept of designer Richard Wassmann was to reduce the desk to its essence without compromising function or stability. The form, achieved by applying innovative technology, is thus reduced to the desktop and four legs. The frame is made of powder-coated steel and consists of two trestles screwed to the top at each end. The design is an interplay of form and material, producing an inspiring desk with flowing lines. By avoiding any form of decoration, this free-standing desk displays intriguing visual lightness – it almost seems to float. Also the functional essence of the desk is discreet, yet present. The desktop, a panel of black 4-mm phenolic resin, is finished with bonded steel edging, and a choice of surface finishes is offered. To equip the desk for everyday use, various office accessories can be attached to the edging. Thus the desk easily blends into many individually designed interiors. With its sleek and refined appearance, “lean” subtly redefines the lines the desk
