MAD no doubt is one of the most recognized architectural practices in China and worldwide. Every year,
MAD receives countless job and internship applications. To be able to work at MAD will definitely enrich
your career as even though the people working here might have been lucky, but are undeniably
outstanding. What could possibly be on the minds of the MAD interns?

Who is your favourite Architect and why?
I'm not fixed to one particular architect as my favourite. I like different architects for different reasons.
I like the structural patterns in the architecture designed by Herzog& de Meuron and the approach
they adopt in every single project. Each of their buildings looks unique. I like the dynamics in Zaha's
design. I like the brilliant concept and clear logic in UnStudio's design. For me, all of these elements
mentioned above are very important to architecture.
What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?
The most distinguishing characteristic is that it has no characteristic – diversity describes it best.
There is Zaha's partner who teaches design, but we also have those who simply focus on the
traditional small houses or art installations. I graduated from STUDIO which stands for experimental
design and construction. Since in Innsbruck we gradutate with a technical technical architecture
degree, the university is actually meant to be more technical, but in fact many works the students
have produced are not that of science, rather, they are more of arts.
What have you gained during the MAD internship?
I came here, because I like the projects at MAD and I wanted to understand how things work within a
company that designs projects of that size. A part from that I have never been to a place as international
as MAD before. Everyone here has a different background and they have different working styles.
– That’s very interesting! Besides I have managed to get some perspective on Chinese culture.
What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment?
Any suggestion?
The Chinese architecture is very interesting. China has old buildings that have thousands of years
of history. It also has those square box architecture that can't be called "architecture" actually.
Meanwhile, many avant-garde buildings are emerging. In Europe it's impossible to tear down the
old buildings, but it's happening in China. I am wondering if this is part of Chinese mentality or
if that is just a contemporarily different way of thinking. I don’t want to judge – I am watching and
curious where this way leads to.
What is your dream?
I wish that my life could be full of surprises everyday, and that my wishes would come true.
What is your dream project?
I don't have a specific project, but I do hope that I can design a project from scratch til it's finished
and from inside out, including all the details.
Amongst the works in your portfolio, which one is your favourite? Why?
It's my degree work, which is called the Illusion of Mobility (“der bewegte Stillstand).
I like it because it incorporates a philosophical thought with actual building requirements.
This thought leads through the whole project and interacts with form experimentation,
program solution and environmental impact. It is translated into a 3D geometrical pattern
which influences the shape of the building, the organization of the rooms, the technical
structure, the interior and the visitor in different ways. All those factors are also influencing
and therefore changing the pattern and finally the thought again.

沒有固定喜歡的建筑師。喜歡赫爾佐格和德梅?。℉&D)的構(gòu)筑圖樣,每一個建筑都是獨特的;

Illusion of Mobility
55% of the population of Miami, Florida are Spanish native speakers.
The majority of them and their ancestors are South American emigrants
who have been arriving by boat for the past 200 years.
The town of Miami, Florida, the University of Miami and the organization
“Arquitectum” decided to set a competition as memoriam to the emigrants.
This was to take the form of a Pier, reaching out to sea, towards the
direction they originally.

The House by the lake
a construction of agreed contradiction
The second half of a semi-detached holiday home has to be erected, on
a very long, narrow piece of sloping land, in Faaker See, Kärnten. The
owners and nighbours commenced building ten years ago. To date, it
is still a ground floor building site, uncompleted! Differences of opinions
between the owners (who are the project manager and builder) and
nighbours, and also the Planning Office have to take into consideration
special requests.
Not only is this building site situated on a small piece of land, but it is
also an environmentally protected recreational area, therefore complicating
acess. Stipulations are to include parking space and utility shed.

quetsch it
and it turns from a tube to a free-form surface
Inspired by nature, a recreational pipe-like structure has been created that
is flexible, and has a stabile surface.
The pipes are hollow cylinders, due to their geometry are stabile and
light, and joined together they create a stabile, light surface that resembles
and finds parallels with our environment e.g. mushrooms, leaves
and stems.
The following experiment was carried out with RAUCLAIR-E plastic-tubing.
With the aid of these geometrical properties, interconnected with each
other at various points, it has been possible to create a flexible and
bending stabile surface. The properties of the material, the positioning
of joints and also the applied tension, create the form. (By varying the
tension in joints, interconnecting pipes become squashed creating surfaces
with varying radii, following the principle that in one, two or three directions
- remains stabile - FIX-FLEX.
To avoid miscalculations within the materials used, further digital experiments
were carried out. By changing the parameters we could demonstrate
the diversity of this concept.

Scapp ando dalla pe ntola
... on th e run - escaping th e pot
An existing building near the metro station Rebbibia in Rome is to be
reconstructed into a Hotel with Shopping Mall, revitalizing the building.
The original structure of the outside building, is to retain as much of its
design as possible. This project is to build the shops, hall and rooms,
however, the furniture is to be either personally deigned or to come from
a well-known collection.
(Kitchen and other areas essential to run a hotel - are to be found in a
nighbouring building - that is to be excluded from this project.)
Idea
The goose is to be cooked, manages to escape the pot, scattering feathers
as she runs in fear - to safety. She has goose-bumps. Traces of
her orange goose-feet are still detectable throughout the building.
Element
The goose feathers, the structure of the goose-bumps and also the
negative form are to be the underpinning elements of this design. The
footsteps and non-colours black and white, also the colour orange are
elements that are repeated in different variations and functions throughout
the building.
